Data visualization can be confusing when creating a graph of two datasets with very different sizes. For example, when you plot “Total Revenue” (in thousands) against “Profit Margin” (a percentage usually less than 100) on the same graph, the line representing Profit Margin shows up as an almost flat line at the bottom of the graph and is nearly invisible.

To address this issue, WPS Spreadsheets provides a way to add a secondary Y-axis to any given data series. Thus, on the right side of the chart, you have a dedicated scale to visualize both metrics without any distortion.

How To Add Two Y axis in WPS Office

Prerequisites

  1. WPS Office Version: 2019 or newer (Interface steps below apply to the 2024/2025 Ribbon UI).
  2. Data Structure: A dataset containing at least one X-axis column (Categories) and two distinct Y-axis columns (Series A and Series B).

Method 1: The “Format Data Series” Method

This method allows you to change a Series created in a standard Column or Line Chart and move it to the Secondary Axis.

Step 1: Create an Initial Chart

  • Select the data that you want to use (make sure that your headers are included in the selection).
  • Go to the Insert Tab and from there choose the Basic Clustered Column or Line Chart type.
  • At this point, you may or may not see one Series (such as a bar or a line) because it is so different in scale compared to the other Series that it can barely be seen.

Step 2: Select the Series that you want to move to the Secondary Vertical Axis

On the Chart, click on the data Series (bar or line) that you want to move to the secondary vertical axis.

Troubleshooting Tip: If you cannot click on the data Series because it is too small (i.e., a value of 0.5%), go to the Chart Tools Tab and, on the left-hand side, there is the “Current Selection” dropdown box. Select the name of the Series from the current selection box.

Step 3: Create the Secondary Y Axis

  1. Right-click the selected series and choose Format Data Series from the context menu. A pane will open on the right side of the interface.
  2. The Format Data Series Window will display the Series Options tab (the icon looks like Column Bars).
  3. In the Series Options tab, locate the section “Plot Series On” and change it to the Secondary Axis.

Method 2: The “Combo Chart” Shortcut (The Fast Way)

If you are starting over and want to use “Combo” to change your existing chart type quickly, Creating a new chart using the Combo option is the most time-efficient way to do this.

  1. Step 1: Select the chart you want to work with.
  2. Step 2: Click Chart Tools on the ribbon, then select Change Chart Type.
  3. Step 3: A new window will open. Click on Combo from the left column to display the Chart Type options.
  4. Step 4: In the new window, you will notice your data series in a table format. Use the checkbox next to the series you wish to be moved to the secondary axis.

Note regarding your Choice of Series: When working with Combo type charts, you must select your primary axis series (ie the clustered column) and combine that with a secondary axis series using a line chart.

Using Dual Axes – Technical Nuance

When using dual axes in WPS Spreadsheets (and Excel), it is common for the zero baseline to not align on both axes. For example, the left axis might show the zero baseline at 0% (or 0%), while the right one in the same graph might start at -10%, thereby giving the appearance of misalignment.

Solution to Aligning the Zero Baseline for Both Axes:

  1. To manually adjust the baseline, double-click the numbers along the right side (the “second axis”).
  2. In the Format Axis area, click on Bounds (Minimum/Maximum) tab.
  3. Manually change the minimum value to zero (or whatever the value is that would reflect on the primary axis). It will ensure both axes align correctly.
